After intense negotiations, G20 delegates have found common ground on the wording to describe Russia's conflict with Ukraine. This breakthrough was reported by PTI, citing diplomatic sources. It marks a significant development as leaders from the world's wealthiest nations convened in New Delhi for the G20 Leaders' Summit and began discussions.

Divisions and deliberations over Ukraine conflict

The G20, consisting of 20 major nations, has been deeply divided over how to address the Ukraine conflict. Western nations have pushed for a strong condemnation of Russia's actions, while Moscow, with support from China, sought to downplay international criticism of its "special military operation." This division had become a major obstacle to unified action.

Prospects for a joint communique

Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa, revealed that the joint declaration is nearly complete and will be presented to G20 leaders during the two-day summit. A previous draft of the declaration showed that negotiators struggled to agree on language related to the Ukraine conflict, leaving the section on the "geopolitical situation" blank.

However, the newly proposed text, crafted by India and accepted by delegates, brings hope for a joint communique. While specific details are not available yet, it may resemble the language used in the 2022 summit's communique in Indonesia, which acknowledged differing viewpoints on Russia's invasion, even as most nations condemned it.
